Qingdao Metro Enhances Accessibility for Foreign Tourists with Multilingual Services and Seamless Payment Options
Qingdao Government | JUNE 04,2025

Identifying and addressing the bottlenecks and pain points that foreign tourists encounter during their travels is critical to the growth of inbound tourism. As both a key urban transit artery and a cultural showcase, Qingdao Metro is actively implementing the Qingdao Inbound Tourism Enhancement Action Plan. By introducing a range of initiatives to ease travel for international visitors, the metro system is contributing to the city's tourism development and helping to strengthen Qingdao's image as the 2024-25 SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital and a world-class coastal destination.

For many international travelers arriving by air, Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport is their first point of contact with China. At the Qingdao Metro Jiaodong Airport Station, multilingual ticketing instructions and brochures in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean help ease the sense of unfamiliarity. Train service announcements in all four languages onboard Metro Line 8 provide foreign passengers with voice-guided navigation throughout their journey. Moving forward, Qingdao Metro plans to expand these multilingual services—particularly Japanese and Korean announcements—to additional major transit hubs and stations near popular tourist attractions, based on passenger feedback.

At 9 major transit hubs—including Jiaodong Airport, Qingdao North Station, and May Fourth Square—as well as stations near international hotels, Qingdao Metro has set up dedicated ticketing guidance for foreign visitors. Ticket machines feature English-language interfaces and voice prompts while 11 high-traffic stations, including Jiaodong Airport, are equipped with smart translation devices capable of real-time interpretation in 70 languages. By integrating text, voice, and technology, Qingdao Metro has created a comprehensive service network that ensures travelers from diverse linguistic backgrounds can read clearly, hear accurately, and get the help they need. Seamless payments are essential to a stress-free journey for international tourists where they no longer face payment barriers when using the metro in Qingdao. At 9 major stations including Jiaodong Airport and May Fourth Square, POS machines that accept international credit and debit cards have been installed to enable smooth transactions for ticket purchases, top-ups, and change—all with a simple tap of a global card. Qingdao Metro has also embedded digital convenience into every detail where tourists can link overseas bank cards to Alipay, WeChat Pay, or the international version of the Digital Yuan and scan QR codes to buy tickets just like local passengers. Special Alipay transit codes that support international cards let tourists start their journey with a simple tap—truly enabling a seamless travel across Qingdao with just one phone.
